Andy Rooney dead at 92

60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney passed away last night. According to CBS, Rooney had gone into hospital for an undisclosed surgery, but major complications developed and he never recovered.

Rooney’s wife of 62 years, Marguerite, died in 2004. He is survived by his four children: Ellen Rooney, a photographer; Brian Rooney, an ABC News correspondent; Emily Rooney, the original host of a Boston public affairs TV program; and Martha Fishel, chief of the public services division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Rooney also leaves behind five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private, the CBS statement said. A memorial service will be announced at a future date.

“It’s a sad day at 60 Minutes and for everybody here at CBS News,” said Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and the executive producer of 60 Minutes told CNN. “It’s hard to imagine not having Andy around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much.”

Rooney had delivered his 1,097th and final televised commentary only a month ago.
