It used to be you couldn’t enter a bookstore without seeing Margaret Atwood’s latest novel. Now, you also can’t turn on the television without seeing her name on screen with premium cable series The Handmaid’s Tale – which just landed 20 Emmy nominations – and Alias Grace winning critical acclaim and awards to boot. Now, those looking to channel their inner Margaret Atwood will have the opportunity to learn from the Canadian legend herself, when she offers her first ever online writing course starting this fall.

The course, offered through MasterClass, an online education company that allows users to learn from leading experts in various fields, will offer students lifetime access to over 20 lessons taught by the literary icon for $90.

Like her literary work, her MasterClass is extensive, covering her approach to fiction writing and her literary philosophy, which involves looking for inspiration in real events that have taken place throughout history.

“Like every other creative endeavour, novel-writing is partly learn-by-doing,” Atwood said of the class in a statement released by MasterClass. “In my MasterClass, I’m happy to share how I wrote my stories, and my processes and tips, with people who want to write fiction themselves.”

Atwood’s practical approach to teaching writing is evident throughout the course, where she teaches students how to choose a narrative point of view and how to create nuanced characters.

In addition to Atwood’s personal lessons, students will be given access to her research materials and the first handwritten draft of The Handmaid’s Tale, as well as manuscript drafts of Alias Grace.

Classes also offer a unique learning experience that involve interactive writing exercises and peer interaction. Atwood herself will even critique literary works from select students.
