Election Night Blackout to be Lifted

Come next federal election, Canadians in eastern Canada won’t have to wait up half the night to find out results. Tim Uppal, the Minister of State for Democratic Reform, announced changes Friday that will allow media outlets to report election results as they become available, rather than withholding the information until the last polls close in Western Canada. Uppal backed the changes, saying that “with widespread use of social media and modern communications technology-Canadians should have freedom to communicate about election results without fear of heavy penalty.” No doubt in an effort to illustrate the rise of social media as a way of spreading breaking news, Uppal Tweeted his impending announcement.
