EZ Beauty: Create a Dramatic Look with Fall’s New Matte Lipsticks

MAC Matte Lipstick

Plush lips wrapped in velvety, full coverage colour is the kind of drama you can create with a matte lipstick. Unlike a cream or gloss, a matte lipstick gives you rich, true colour payoff and hours of lasting power. Women who adore its retro appeal don’t mind the dryness that can come with the product (matte lipsticks contain fewer emollients), but any woman of any age can wear it if the right prep work is done in advance.

Start by exfoliating your lips with your toothbrush (or create your own lip scrub at home by mixing a teaspoon of brown sugar with a bit of honey and a drizzle of olive oil). Follow up with a lip balm, or lip conditioner.

Use a pencil first to help keep feathering at bay and then use a lip brush to apply your lipstick so that you can take care in staying within the lip line (small slips and dips will be magnified when using a matte product). If you find it too drying, go ahead and top with just a touch of balm. Don’t over power your face with heavy makeup—let all of the attention fall on your lips.

This fall, MAC has introduced several new shades in their Retro Matte formula ($18 each) that will join their very popular Ruby Woo (a classic blue-based red). In addition to this, they’ve launched new shades in their Pro Longwear lip pencils ($23 each) as well. Both are available in MAC stores or online.
