Facebook Gaffe Tags Grandmothers as “Grandmaster Flash”

Either Facebook has an auto-fill glitch or hip hop legend Grandmaster Flash is overly concerned with the welfare of your grandchildren.

In a trend sweeping the social network site, thousands of grandmothers reaching out to their grandchildren on Facebook have accidently signed their name as “Grandmaster Flash.”

The reason – Facebook’s auto-fill tool automatically fills in the name it thinks you’re typing. For example, when a grandmother signs off on a message to a grandchild by writing “Love Grandpa and Grandma,” the auto-fill function kicks in when they start typing “G-R-A-N-D-M” and it finishes the name it thinks is Grandmaster Flash.

This occurs because “Grandma” isn’t the person’s user name on Facebook, so the auto-fill function fills in the closest match, which happens to be the name of the 56-year-old pioneering musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. And because many don’t realize what’s happened, they hit the “Send” button and unwittingly become the subject of LOL’s from their confused grandkids.

The auto-fill gaffe has led to countless messages of love and affection on Facebook attributed to Grandmaster Flash – so many, in fact, that they’ve spurred their own Tumblr page: “Love, Grampa and Grandmaster Flash.”

Some examples from the site:

“Happy birthday Cassie and Jessie. It is hard to believe that 20 years have gone by so fast. Wish we could be there. Love Grandpa and Grandmaster Flash”

“Welcome home to Colorado Tim. Love Grandmaster Flash”

And one of my favourites, from a grandmother who isn’t happy with her granddaughter’s cursing: “I have a letter to send you from your dad so give me your address please. And please don’t use those offensive words. Grandmaster Flash.”

So take note – the next time you write your grandkids on Facebook, double-check your sign off before sending!
