Have a Ball at the Beach

The only goop you’re likely to encounter on Florida’s 825 miles beaches these days is in a tube of skin-protecting sunscreen. To prove it, 3,700 volunteers armed with cameras took to the state’s sandy shores on Saturday, Nov. 6th for the Great VISIT FLORIDA Beach Walk. If a picture is worth a thousand words, their more than 5,200 photos add up to at least 5 million words!

Initiated by Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism organization, Saturday’s coastline event may well be the world’s biggest beach rally. Ordinary folks, from dog-walkers, kayakers and young families with children to wildlife conservationists, all hit the sand in an effort to show the world that in spite of last spring’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Florida’s beaches are pristine and ready to welcome visitors as usual. Check out photos of your favourite beach by going to www.VISITFLORIDA.com/BeachWalk. (Until Dec. 6/10, American residents can vote for their favourite mile and become eligible to win a snappy Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible and a $5,000 gift card.)
