It’s Hot Hot Hot!

It is the year of extreme weather conditions. It may be unbearably hot for some, but just 7 months ago we were entering one of the biggest snowstorms in three years.

Forecasters are predicting that today will be the hottest day of the year for Central and Eastern Canada. Environment Canada says the mercury will possibly hit 34 C in Ottawa, 33 C in Montreal and 32 C in Fredericton. The high in Windsor could reach 39 C.

The high temperatures are caused by what is called a heat dome, a hot, stagnant high-pressure area that keeps cold weather out. The dome is currently over the United States and will spread up to Western Canada over the weekend.

It doesn’t look like we’ll be finding a break in the heat anytime soon. Here are some tips on how to stay cool.

Stay inside. If there is no air-conditioning, stay away from upper floors.
Wear white. Darker colours tend to absorb the heat, white reflects the heat.
Eat smaller meals. Eating smaller meals more often will put less stress on your overheated body.
Drink water. Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Try iced teas or popsicles if you aren’t a fan of water.
Ice packs are your best friend. Keep them handy for when you need immediate relief.
