Last American Born in 1800s Dies at Age 116

Brooklyn’s Susannah Mushatt Jones died yesterday evening in her senior home. She was 116-years-old. According to sources, she was the last known American to have been born in the 1800s.

Often referred to as “Miss Susie” by loved ones, she told newspaper outlets last year that her secret to long life was getting a good amount of sleep, not smoking and not drinking—although she did profess her lifelong love for bacon.

The Gerontology Research Group—which often works with the Guinness Book of World Records—claims the world’s oldest person is now Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, an Italian woman born in November of 1899.
