That’s one reason why Ontario’s health regulators are putting reliable information about regulated health professionals online. The regulators are called ‘colleges’. The colleges oversee 28 health professions, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and many more. There are over 300,000 Ontario health professionals listed in public registers. You can search the registers anytime for reliable information about your healthcare professional.

These are just some of the things you can learn by searching a health profession public register.

How do the registers work?

By law, every college must publish a profile of each of their members’ history. The standards for becoming and staying a member of a regulated health profession are very high in Ontario. When you search through a register by name, you can get answers to questions like these:

• Is this provider a member in good standing?
• When did they register to practice in Ontario?
• Where do they provide services?
• Have they had restrictions put on their practice because of professional misconduct?
