Nora Ephron: Remembering a Hollywood icon

Nora Ephron, who had a devoted following for her razor sharp wit and perceptive, deeply personal writing, passed away from complications of leukemia on June 26. She was 71.

While she was celebrated as a prolific journalist, essayist, blogger and author, she is perhaps best known for her box office hits When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. Other notable works include her novel and screenplay for Heartburn (the expose of her marriage to former Washington Post journalist Carl Bernstein) and the whistle blower, corporate cover-up drama Silkwood. Her romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail features two business rivals (Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks) who hate each other but fall in love over the Internet.

Nora Ephron’s last film Julie and Julia explored the trendy fascination with food and gourmet cooking.

Throughout her career, Ms. Ephron gave women a strong voice — and often a funny one. She fearlessly took on issues of aging with her characteristic self-deprecating humour in her 2006 book I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman.
