Residents at Retirement Miramichi enjoy a relaxed, easy going lifestyle in an affordable and attractive rental housing community that is private and secure.

The thriving and active retirement community was created when New Brunswick’s Canadian Forces Base Chatham closed in 1997, leaving behind more than 260 well-kept homes once occupied by members of the military.

Located in Miramichi, a community of 17,000 people on the picturesque northeastern coast of the province and just a short distance from the famous Miramichi River, it is Atlantic Canada’s only non-profit retirement community.

“It’s easy to see why people from across Canada are choosing Retirement Miramichi,” says Marketing Director Tracy Fernandez. “You can live in your own spacious house in a friendly, safe and well treed retirement neighbourhood for less than you would pay for a small apartment in most Canadian cities.”

Retirement Miramichi has proven to be popular with area retirees and those from across Canada and around the globe: 40 percent of residents hail from Ontario, 40 per cent from Atlantic Canada, and the rest from other Canadian provinces, Ecuador, Australia, and the United Kingdom.  The average age of tenants is 65.

Retirement Miramichi rents 17 styles of unfurnished homes, both detached and semi-detached, ranging from two-bedroom bungalows to four-bedroom, two-storey homes.  All have hardwood floors, full basements, paved driveways and generous properties.

Tenants are free to plant flower and vegetable gardens, and pets are welcome.  Canada Post provides door-to-door mail delivery.  Snow removal and lawn mowing are included in the rent, which ranges from $588 to $883 per month. Rents cover all home maintenance.

Retirement Miramichi residents enjoy the sense of community enhanced by a tenant social centre right in their midst.  The HeRMItage provides a gathering place for potluck suppers, card parties, and information sessions with guest speakers.  Events are organized by tenant committees which provide a great opportunity to get involved and meet people.  Pets are welcome in the community.

Retirement Miramichi is a short walk from the city’s indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, curling club and walking trails. The city offers restaurants, shopping, churches, pharmacies, a community college, library, movie theatres, a marina, and exercise facilities within 2.5 kilometres.

Miramichi is the site of numerous festivals, including Irish, folk and bluegrass events, plus the annual Acadian Day.  A new community theatre recently set up shop and The Gaming Centre is equipped with slot machines, bingo games and a restaurant.

The Atlantic Ocean is just a 30-minute drive away. Beaches, boating, fishing, golfing, walking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling on a nearby network of trails – and doing absolutely nothing – all are options at Retirement Miramichi.

Those who want an occasional taste of city life can find it in Fredericton, which is two hours south, or Moncton, which is 90 minutes to the southeast.  Airports are located in Moncton and Bathurst.

Health and wellness in the Miramichi region is administered by the Horizon Health Network, one of two health districts in New Brunswick. The Miramichi Regional Hospital is a six-level, state-of-the-art facility located eight kilometres from Retirement Miramichi and Miramichi Transit stops at the hospital every half hour. The hospital is across from the banks of the Miramichi River and the grounds provide walking trails for staff and patients.

There are two after hours health care clinics in the community and one day clinic.

The area is served by high speed internet service, cable and satellite television, daily provincial and national newspapers, a thrice-weekly community newspaper, three local FM radio stations, a local French language radio station, and CBC radio in both official languages.

People interested in living at Retirement Miramichi are welcome to drop by for a tour between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.  The community offers visitors a free night at a local hotel while they are in the area.
