The Stars and Snubs of the 2015 Primetime Emmy Nominations

This year could see the first African-American winner of the Lead Actress, Drama, award, while Mel Brooks could become the oldest Emmy winner ever…

If fans of the hit HBO drama Game of Thrones get their way, winter will be coming early – on Sept. 20 to be exact – when the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards are handed out. The blockbuster fantasy show wracked up a whopping 24 Emmy nominations this morning when the nods were announced, the most of any show, including for Outstanding Drama Series. Of course, they’ve received a nomination in that category every season and have yet to win, so it’ll be interesting to see if Jon Snow’s death was in vain this year.

One of the most intriguing possibilities at this years awards arises in the Lead Actress, Drama, category, with both How to Get Away with Murder’s Viola Davis, 49, and Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, 44, both nominated, as no African-American woman has ever won this category.

As well, Mel Brooks, 89, may not be the oldest Emmy nominee ever – that nod goes to Betty White, nominated in 2012 at age 90 – he could beat White’s record as oldest Emmy winner by a year if he takes home the gold statuette for his guest-starring role on the Billy Crystal comedy The Comedians.

As far as high profile snubs this year, Jane the Virgin received no nominations after proving a hit at the 2015 Golden Globes. Kerry Washington was shut out for Lead Actress, Drama for Scandal and Empire received no Outstanding Drama Series nod. And Jim Parsons, who’s been nominated for his role as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory every year since 2009, and has won the Emmy four times, also didn’t receive a nomination.
