Rhizome Café, Vancouver

It is more than an eatery, more than an arts venue and definitely more than just a meeting place, it is the Rhizome Café. Stuffed into the now-defunct “Hatch Breakfast Parlour” space on the Main Street Strip, this rookie will try to serve up luscious vegetarian fare and with a bit of luck, do more.

Equipped with a small stage, DJ beooth, PA system for live music and other performances, all is in plain view after entering through the infamous large garage door at the storefront, which has also been revived into a solarium-type room. The purpose, owners hope, is that their little shop will bring the hood together and encourage workshops, jam sessions and other local events. One of the walls, for example, focuses solely on highlighting local artwork with a Mount Pleasant theme.

The name “Rhizome” derives from a root system plants use to spread themselves. Rhizome plants, instead of running downwards, run parallel to the earth and the plants shoot up to the surface to create what looks like several different plants. The café wants to provide the same system, not just being a root but to connect individuals by offering common ground for their existence.

Going on the herbivorous theme, they serve healthy and affordable meals. Made from fresh, local ingredients, served with the care you can only find in small, intimate diners also known as your second family.

Try the Ginger Carrot Soup ($5), light and hearty with a solid dose of the sweetness of carrots. Or, my kryptonite, the Roasted Pepper Hummus ($5.50), which has a kick that differs from the regular ol’ dish. The Quesadillas ($6.50) looked tasty and filling with the rice bowls and tofu dishes looking at-par with the deliciousness surrounding me.

To keep euphoric, grab a Guinness for only $6 or choose from a Grasshopper, Honey Brown Ale, specialty teas, coffee or juice. Everything is under $10 and beats most other places for taste. The rookie café is an all-around joy, it can only get better once the live music, and performances get going.
