Beba , NYC
Admittedly, SoHo doesn’t suffer from any shortage of of-the-moment hipster spots. In fact, that’s the definition of SoHo. But that didn’t stop Beba from coming in, doing what SoHo spots do best: serving up (potentially) trend-setting fare in a well-designed “unique-ish” atmosphere. But “Unique-ish” is really the best way to describe the fare at Beba; it’s different with a significantly fitting layout, and great lounge furniture.
But these aspects don’t technically make it different. This definition is a dog chasing its own tail, but it’s true. Let’s go to the menu, shall we? The appetizers are screaming, “Get a bunch and share me.” With starters like salmon and tuna tartar, pan seared poached egg and truffle vinaigrette, grilled sausages, grilled octopus, or the selections of hummus, tzatziki, taramosalata and melitzanosalata, getting a bunch and splitting them will surprisingly fill you up. However, there are pre-paired platters already, like the whole grilled fagri and lemon saffron vinaigrette, porterhouse with sautéed wild greens, or the herb and garlic stuffed leg of lamb. Cold cucumber soup or the Beba country salad are cheap individual portions if you don’t want to go in with the group but still save a bit. However, if money is no option, divulge on their entrees like the seared diver scallops, 7 spice caramelized tuna, filet mignon, wild mushroom vegetable medley, rack of lamb, seared medallions of pork tenderloin sautee greens and figs, and many other Mediterranean dishes.
Ranging from about $20-$36, she’s a pricey little number, but that’s what you expect from this “unique-ish” Beba . Considering about 75% of restaurants close during their first year of operation, Beba has a good shot at sticking around for a while, mostly due to the raving opening reviews, earthly atmosphere, and the appeal to hip upperclassmen. Also, it has a full bar. The spiral staircase is more of a tool for the bartender to know when to cut you off.
