Golden Globe nominations announced

We all have our favourites when it comes to movies and TV and soon it will be time to cheer them on as award season gets underway. This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the movies and television shows nominated for Golden Globe Awards this year.

The list has many familiar names, many of whom have already have shelves weighed down with awards. Industry watchers weren’t surprised to see George Clooney (who is up for three awards, including Best Director), Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep. Chances are you won’t be surprised to see Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese receive nods for Best Director, or the runaway best seller The Help among the films nominated for best picture.

Many Canadians get the nod this year too, including Ryan Gosling for his roles in The Ides of March and Crazy, Stupid Love, and Christopher Plummer for his role as an ailing senior coming to terms with his homosexuality in The Beginners.

And while not a nomination per se, it was also announced today that Morgan Freeman will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

On the TV side, The Big Bang Theory didn’t make the cut for best comedy, but actor Johnny Galecki got a nomination for his role. What shows made us laugh this year? The nominations for Best Comedy or Musical include Enlightened, Episodes, Glee, Modern Family and the new comedy New Girl.

On the drama side, nominations included American Horror Story, Boardwalk Empire, Boss, Game Of Thrones and Homeland. As often happens with award season, some of the shows and movies are so new we might not have seen them yet in Canada.

Without further ado, watch the announcement of this year’s nominees (or skip ahead to read the list):
