Absolutely Fabulous returns with new episodes

Absolutely Fabulous premiered twenty years ago, introducing the world to five outrageous, hilarious and undeniably fabulous ladies. Edina, Patsy, Saffron, Bubble and Mother return to the limelight on June 28th and July 5th at 8:30pm ET with two brand new specials airing on VisionTV.

The first of the two specials is our first look at their lives in twenty years, and one of them has been away for a while, so they have some catching up to do. As one of the girls returns with a new best friend who appears to be both a blessing and a curse to their household, they are forced to grow even closer than ever. One of the ladies may even own up to her real age.

The second special delves a little deeper into their lives, as Eddy has fewer clients than ever and her daughter despises her, as per usual. When Eddy and Patsy meet a famous French film star that Saffy loves, she hopes it will bring them closer. Eddy takes the star on as a client, but her big plans fall apart rather quickly.

We had the chance to ask Julia Sawalha, who plays the role of Saffy, about her character and the new episodes:

It’s been twenty years since the show first aired, how have the characters grown since we last saw them? How are they still the same?

They have only grown in terms of age. They all suffer from ‘arrested development’ and as none of them are aware of their character defects they have basically stayed the same. They all thrive off the dysfunctional relationships with each other and would be very lost without that dysfunction.

What was the best part about reprising your role as Saffy?

The best part about reprising the role of Saffy was having the chance to work with all the cast again. There is a great sense of ‘oneness’ within the group which is very rare. Also we spend most of the day laughing through rehearsals and on set, which is always a plus.

How are you different or similar to her in your real life?

I couldn’t be more different from Saffy. I do a lot of soul searching and am always trying to improve myself spiritually and emotionally in order to better my relationships within my working environment and personal life. I also have a better dress sense (I hope!).

As of now there are only two new episodes, are there any plans to make more?

I don’t know of any more episodes being planned, the two Christmas specials were well received so, who knows..?

After the specials air, VisionTV will be re-airing season one in it’s entirety, so be sure to stay tuned.
