Announcing the 2013 Governor General Award Laureates

The 2013 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards were announced earlier this week in Montreal, including six for lifetime artistic achievement in recognition of “artists for their outstanding body of work and enduring contribution to the performing arts in Canada.” This year’s laureates include:

As well, Montreal cultural supporter and fundraiser Jean Pierre Desrosiers receives the 2013 Ramon John Hnatysyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts, while director Sarah Polley is honoured with the National Arts Centre Award “for exceptional achievement over the past performance year.”

Launched in 1992 by the Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards bring laureates $25,000, a medallion from the Royal Canadian Mint, a National Film Board of Canada (NFB) short film dedicated to their life and work, and various public events in their honour – including a June 1 gala hosted at the National Arts Centre.

“We are an arts nation,” His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston said before the laureates were announced. “The Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only the careers of notable artists, but also those who give their time, talent and resources to the arts.”
