Book of the Week: Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld

The author of American Wife and Prep returns with a complex look at the relationship between identical twin sisters Kate and Violet Schramm, who were born with innate abilities to discern future events and other people’s secrets. While Kate, our narrator, seeks a quiet suburban life with her husband and two small children, Vi embraces her visions and pursues a career as a psychic medium.

After a minor tremor hits the city of St. Louis, where they live,  Vi goes on television predicting a devastating earthquake. While Kate is mortified and tries to distance herself from her sister, she is also fearful that Vi may be right. As  the novel shifts back and forth between the twins’ adolescence and the present day (where the predicted date of the earthquake quickly approaches) Kate is forced to reconsider her relationship with her sister and their strange gift.
