BEST-DRESSED AT TIFF: Dame Helen Mirren

You would think that an entire gown featuring big blooming botanical prints would be overpowering. But trust fashion doyenne Helen Mirren to make it look easy and breezy.

And here is why it works for her. The Dolce & Gabbana rose print gown the 70-year-old actress wore to the premiere of Eye in the Sky during the Toronto International Film Festival last Friday was black and white, which made it more graphic and easy on the eyes. If it was a veritable bouquet of colourful blossoms, it might have shrieked rather than be so chic.

The sheer sleeves not only helped lighten things up but also gave it a certain amount of sex appeal. Add a cinched waist, which accentuated her hourglass figure, and a vibrant scarlet lip, and you can see why Mirren cuts a swath on the red carpet.
