Leonard Cohen, Gord Downie and Celine Dion Among Nominees for 2017 Juno Awards
Leonard Cohen, Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip and Celine Dion are among the 2017 Juno Award nominees.
The nominations, announced this morning in Toronto, see Cohen, who passed away last November, up for four awards – Album of the Year for his brilliant final disc You Want It Darker, Adult Alternative Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Artist of the Year. In fact, the former Zoomer cover subject, who completed his final album with his son Adam while battling terminal cancer, is the only person over 45 up for Artist of the Year honours. At age 82 when he died, the next oldest nominee in the category, rapper Drake, 30, is 52 years younger and the youngest nominee in the category, Shawn Mendes, 18, is 64 years younger.
The Tragically Hip landed Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year noms for their latest disc, Man Machine Poem, for which they embarked on a final tour last summer with frontman Gord Downie, who announced he is battling terminal brain cancer. The singer/songwriter, who celebrated his 53rd birthday yesterday, earned four Juno nominations for The Secret Path, an album centred around the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Ojibwe boy who died in 1966 while attempting to find his way home after running away from a residential school in Northern Ontario. The album landed Downie nominations for Songwriter of the Year (“The Stranger,” “The Only Place to Be,” “Son”), Adult Alternative Album of the Year, Recording Package of the Year and Video of the Year (“Stranger”).
Céline Dion, meanwhile, received nominations for both Album of the Year and Adult Contemporary Album of the Year for Encore un soir. The latter category pits the 48-year-old against Sarah McLachlan (Wonderland) and Heather Rankin (A Fine Line), both 49.
The Junos will also hand out honorary awards at the ceremony, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame induction of Sarah McLachlan, the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award to singer, artist and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie, 75, and the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award to music and broadcasting executive and champion of Canadian music artists Randy Lennox.
The 2017 Juno Awards take place in Ottawa on April 2nd. See next page for the full list of the 2017 Juno nominees…
