Couple Accused of Elder Abuse After Woman Found in Freezing Garage

A couple has come under fire in the Scarborough area after it was discovered that the man’s mother was living in life-threatening conditions.  The 68-year-old woman was found unconscious by paramedics with signs of frost bite leading to her hospitalization. Her son and daughter-in-law had been housing her in their uninsulated garage for a great portion of the winter. She was being fed very little, sleeping on a makeshift bed and using a portable toilet which was not being cleaned regularly. What makes this story even more strange is the fact that the couple’s home boasts two storeysand several unoccupied rooms. Kwong Yan, 43, and Qi Tan, 28, are charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The reason for the harsh treatment carried out by the couple is still unknown, but police authorities have assured the public that they intend to get to the bottom of it.
