Oscar-winning actress and iconic beauty Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79.

“She was surrounded by her children – Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd and Maria Burton,” said Taylor’s publicist.

The screen legend has been fighting illness for a while and on Feb. 11, it was announced she had been checked in to Los Angeles’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to treat congestive heart failure.

All of her loved ones hoped her condition would stabilize and she could return home. However, Taylor passed on peacefully.

Aside from her notable movie roles, Taylor was also known for her perfume empire, philanthropic endeavours and, of course, her closely followed personal life which consisted of eight marriages.

Elizabeth Taylor lived an extraordinary life. In 1992, she told Good Housekeeping: “So far, I’ve lived a tremendously full life. I don’t know how I could have crammed more into it.”

She is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her family has requested donations be made to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS foundation in lieu of flowers. Information on the memorial service will be released at a later date.
