No Guinness Record for the 100-Year-Old Runner

We were very happy to report last week that 100-year-old marathon runner Fauja Singh had completed the Scotiabank marathon after 8 hours, 11 minutes and 5.9 and would be placed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest person to complete a run that distance. We have some bad news: the Guinness World Records will not be recognizing the centenarian runner after all. They told the BBC that Singh can’t show a birth certificate with proof of birth on April 1, 1911. Singh has a British passport showing his date of birth, as well as a letter from the Queen congratulating him on his 100th birthday- but Indian government officials say no birth records were kept in 1911. The records Singh set last week will be acknowledged by World Master Athletics.
