Elizabeth Taylor’s Auction Breaks Records

Elizabeth Taylor’s diamonds found new best friends last night. The National Velvet star’s prized collection of diamonds, necklaces, a tiara, pearls, rings and rubies were auctioned off at Christie’s in New York, bringing in a record-setting $115 million. Taylor, who passed away last March at the age of 79, was a famous jewelry enthusiast, with pieces designed by famous names like Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier.

Her diamond ring – a gift from ex-husband Richard Burton – sold for a dazzling $8.8 million dollars while a pearl necklace went for more than $11.8 million. The diamond bracelet she was given by Michael Jackson sold for a $194,500.

The movie star’s clothing, art and memorobilia will be sold off in another auction later this week. Part of the proceeds will go to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991. Christie’s in London will also auction off Taylor’s collection of impressionist and modern art.
