Canada’s Crime Rate Lowest Since 1972

Although it seems the news has been particularly violent as of late, according to Statistics Canada, the rate of crimes reported to police in Canada reached its lowest level in 2011 since 1972.

Police services reported around two million incidents last year. That is 110,000 fewer than in 2010.

Decreases were in significant categories including attempted murder, sexual assaults, major assaults, break-ins, robberies and motor vehicle thefts. Unfortunately, there was an increase in 2011 in impaired driving, sexual offenses against children, homicide and most drug offences.

According to StatsCan, the crime rate peaked in 1991 and has been decreasing since, hitting its lowest point in 40 years in 2011.
