The Galapagos: Nature Lover’s Paradise

Long a draw for the nature buff, birder and wildlife enthusiast, the Galapagos Island are a special destination indeed. There are a variety of ways to experience the islands, but we find most Canadians choose the fly/cruise option.

You fly from Canada to Quito, the country’s capital for an overnight, and the next day board your flight to the island of Baltra where the cruise ships depart. Cruises last usually from four to twelve days, and your vessel options range from yachts to larger ships, from basic accommodation to luxury afloat, complete with room service, high-end linens and fine cuisine.

As the islands are fairly far apart, your boat will cruise during the night so each day you discover a new destination. It’s worth visiting multiple islands as the fauna can vary in each, and chances are you’re here for the wildlife!

It’s no exaggeration to say the islands are a nature lover’s paradise. Not only are the diverse creatures so different from what we have at home – albatrosses, iguanas, sea lions, flamingos, penguins and giant tortoises – but they do not appear threatened by man so you can walk amongst many of them, including the magnificent giant tortoises. It’s no exaggeration to say that people who are lucky enough to visit the Galapagos Islands find it a life changing trip.

And something that may surprise you: not only do many of the island offer lovely beaches, from dramatic black sand to idyllic white, but you can also snorkel here, with water temperatures averaging 70F+. Or experience the thrill of skimming across these famous waters in a kayak.
