Circumnavigation of Newfoundland
There is nowhere else on earth like Newfoundland. The island has a certain magic that comes from its outpost as a rocky sentinel surrounded by the North Atlantic and the warmth of its inhabitants. Famous for quirky names like Come by Chance, Blow me Down, Cove the Dead, Newfoundland is also home to historical sites such as L’Anse aux Meadow and Signal Hill. Newfoundland offers exceptional hiking opportunities and tasty food festivals.
L’Anse aux Meadows
The only authenticated Norse archaeological site in all of North America, L’Anse aux Meadows, at the northern tip of Newfoundland, is a must-see. Dating back over 1,000 years, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is evidence of a pre-Columbian trans-oceanic exploration.
Gros Morne National Park
Gros Morne National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides a rare example of the continental drift. It’s the perfect backdrop for all kinds of outdoor activities, particularly hiking. Discover both marked and unmarked trails winding throughout the landscape, and explore the park’s dense forests for rare plant, animal, and bird species.
Hiking the Tablelands is an experience that cannot be forgotten. You can walk over the ancient sea floor and preserved ocean avalanches. It’s a distinctive red landscape of exposed earth’s mantle, thrust up by the collision of tectonic plates millions of years ago.
Newfoundland is famous for fishing music, poetry, storytelling, folk art—and amazingly welcoming people. We find the heart of Newfoundland in the remote outports and no visit would be complete without meeting the locals and hearing their stories.
