Is Urinary Incontinence Affecting Your Quality of Sleep and Lifestyle?

Many women struggle with urinary incontinence and find it challenging to manage the condition. Often traditional methods like incontinence pads and briefs may not keep the skin dry. Depending on the amount of output, frequent changes may be required to also help ensure there are no complications to skin health like dermatitis or the possibility of a urinary tract infection.

There’s got to be a better way to manage…

The story of how a solution to this problem was created was born out of necessity and love. While doing her monthly rounds of home visits, Dr. Camille Newton stopped in to see one of her patients who was struggling with urinary incontinence and skin health. The patient’s husband who was a retired scientist was the primary care provider and was instructed to consistently change and re-position his wife to assist with managing the moisture to allow her skin issues to heal.

He was doing all he could to manage and was complying with the Dr’s instructions, but he was growing tired and frustrated with how his wife’s condition was deteriorating no matter how much he did.

His scientific background and innate curiosity to solve problems brought to life the first iteration of what’s now known as the BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System. The product was very basic in its initial design and when Dr. Newton saw the invention and the tremendous improvements in his wife’s skin health, she knew he was onto something.

Together they decided to share this outstanding invention with the world and started a company called PureWick™. A few years later after launching, PureWick™ was acquired by C.R. Bard a leading medical device company with a long history of bringing innovations to healthcare professionals and end user alike with urinary discomfort. In 2018 Becton Dickinson and Company acquired C.R. Bard and is now proud to bring PureWick™ to millions of users and their families to provide them with a new method to helping them improve their lives.

The BD PureWick™ Urine Collection System is an innovative option to managing urinary incontinence. The system works outside the body to draw urine away, helping to keep skin dry.

Simple and non-invasive, the PureWick™ Female External Catheter effectively draws urine away from the body through soft material and deposits the waste into a sealed collection canister. The entire system fits on a nightstand or small end table near where you sleep.  It can be used effectively while lying down on your back, side, or while you’re seated in a comfortable reclined position.

PureWick™ is a system helps women with urinary incontinence who are looking for better alternatives to manage their condition and provide some assurances that:

  • Risks related to falls are minimized due to late night visits to the bathroom
  • Skin irritation due to wetness or moisture in the sensitive area
  • Struggling to get a good night’s sleep either themselves or for their loved ones who may provide nightly assistance with changes or bed exits

Do yourself a favor and change methods, not diapers or pads and re-gain your quality of sleep!
