We all know it’s coming: the fall frenzy. As the lazy hazy days of summer make way for your fall routine, healthy eating can be challenging, but Medjool dates make the perfect on-the-go snack. Keep a tub of Medjools in your desk drawer—in your home office too—and a stash in your purse or gym bag.

And you can still have some summer fun by hanging onto that cottagey campfire feeling! Imagine starting your day with this smores energy ball or enjoying a few with a coffee in front of that first indoor fire.

These delicious bites are made with Natural Delights Medjool Dates for a naturally sweet snack. These Medjool dates are a pure and wholesome superfood picked straight off the tree at the peak of ripeness.  Plump and naturally sweet, the only things added are sunshine and water.  Grown at the intersection of California and Arizona, a perfect microclimate along the Colorado River, these premium Medjool dates are a nourishing portable snack that provides long-lasting energy, full of antioxidants, potassium, and fibre. They are also a nutritious and natural replacement for processed sugar in your favourite drinks and dishes, to help fuel your active lifestyle.

Natural Delights Smores Balls

12oz (340 g) package of Natural Delights Pitted Medjool Dates

3-4 tbsp (45-60 mL) heavy cream, divided

1 tbsp (30 mL) cocoa powder

Pinch of salt

½ cup (125 mL) graham cracker crumbs

¼ cup (60 mL) mini marshmallows

Line a baking sheet (one that fits in your refrigerator) with parchment paper.

Add the Medjool dates, cocoa powder and salt to a food processor, with 2 tbsp (30 mL) of the cream. Process and slowly add additional cream, up to 2 tbsp (30 mL), until a creamy but thick consistency is achieved. Spread the graham cracker crumbs on a shallow plate.

Using a spoon, scoop the date mixture—about 1 ½ tbsp (22 mL) at a time—and loosely form a ball on the spoon. Stuff in 2-3 (or more!) mini marshmallows, drop the date ball into the graham crackers and roll ball around until fully coated. You can keep a bowl of warm water and a kitchen towel close by to rinse your fingers if needed. Continue until you’ve made 12 smores balls, placing each onto the parchment-lined baking sheet.

Place the baking sheet in refrigerator and allow to set for about 20 mins or until firm to the touch. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week!

If your dates aren’t super fresh and soft, you can add them to a small bowl with some boiling water to cover the dates and allow to sit before draining water and adding to food processor.

While Medjool dates are high in natural sugars, they are low on the glycemic index thanks to a balanced amount of soluble fibre. The complex carbohydrates found in Medjool dates are digested at a slower rate, making them a source of dietary fibre and releasing energy to the body over a longer period of time.

Along with whole Medjool dates, making energy balls helps you to customize your snacking. Want a little energy ball fun that tracks your on-the-go snack as you create it? Natural Delights has an Energy Ball Builder that’s interactive and has a multitude of different combinations you can customize online, blend and roll! It’s fun for kids and adults alike and a great Sunday afternoon snack to help prep for the week ahead.
