The week of September 14th is National Negroni Week 2020. And, although we may not be able to fly to Italy just yet without facing a quarantine – and where the drink has its origins – we can now head out to enjoy it at our local, while practicing physical distancing and masking up.
Or, you can practice the art of mixology at home and impress your social bubble. And, the best part about this year’s event is that many aspects are virtual. More importantly, there is a spirit of giving back. Campari Canada, the makers of Campari, a key ingredient in the Negroni, are in it to pay it forward.
The initiative is in addition to what the distillers at Campari Canada, as well as Corby, Diageo, Beam Suntory and Moët Hennessy/Charton Hobbs, announced a $50,000 donation each to the Bartenders Benevolent Fund, a Canadian non-profit organization that is raising much-needed funds for bartenders, servers and other hospitality staff who have fallen under serious financial hardship across the country. (Look for #ShakenNotBroken and #ComingTogether on social media for more.)
This year’s Campari initiatives include:
- Negroni + Culinary Masterclasses – Canada’s top bartenders will be joined by Toronto superstar Chef Rob Gentile, Canada’s Top Chef judge Mujine Pak and Chef Exécutif Kevin Ramasawm together with the team at Montreal’s Bar George to learn the art of aperitivos and how to craft the perfect Negroni. The live classes are happening through the week in English and French and are ‘pay what you can’, with all proceeds going towards the Canadian Bartenders Benevolent Fund. The full schedule and registration is here.
- Campari bottle donation: Canadians can support by purchasing a bottle of Campari with $1 of every bottle going to the Bartender Benevolent Fund in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan (Sobey’s and Willow Park), Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.
- Share your Negroni: Campari will be donating $1 for every original Negroni photo posted on Instagram with the hashtag #NegroniWeekCA2020.
Secret Recipe: Negroni
Rumour has it that about 100 years ago, Count Camillo Negroni of Florence, Italy, asked his bartender friend, who was mixing them up at Caffe Casoni, to take his favourite cocktail, the Americano, up a notch. Soda water was replaced with gin, and a star was born.
1 oz Campari
1 oz Gin (choose a London Dry style gin)
1 oz Red Vermouth (try Cinzano Rosso)
1 slice of orange
Pour all ingredients directly into a rock tumbler glass filled with ice.
Garnish with a slice of orange.
