Trivia of the day for October 4

Keep red buoys on your right side when returning from the sea.

There are two colors of navigation light on Aids to Navigation (ATON) buoys – red and green. A buoy will have either a red light or a green one. Red is unsafe, green is safe. These aids mark safe and dangerous areas in channels and harbors. Not every body of water has ATON, only those waters with a large number of vessels in routine use. An unsafe area might have rocks, shallow water or some other submerged hazard. Green marks safe water. Keep the RED buoys on your RIGHT side when RETURNING from the sea – or going INTO harbor. The red buoy will be far enough outside the hazard so you won’t hit it so long as you stay on the correct side of the buoy.
