Botox and Filler: Fresh non-surgical options

With the growing popularity of the cosmetic surgery industry, there are several anti-aging products and procedures that are available and many consumers feel unsure which methods are most effective. Dr. Torgerson, a facial cosmetic surgeon in Toronto, offers his expertise on some effective and non-invasive techniques that are available to help you look younger and feel refreshed in time for spring.

The first option that can be employed is the use of injectable fillers. Dr. Torgerson states, “As part of the aging process, collagen in our skin diminishes, causing us to lose facial volume that helped us look fresh and young. Injectable fillers are a safe and instant solution to help rebuild lost volume and restore the skins’ youthful appearance”. Dr. Torgerson prefers to use injectable fillers such as Restylane and Perlane, which contain hyaluronic acid (HA). Hylauronic acid is a naturally occurring protein in the soft connective tissue of the skin. These injectable fillers typically last 6- 9 months and are the most popular fillers used for men and women alike.

HA Injectable fillers are easy to use and can be injected in almost any area of the face. Specifically, Dr. Torgerson prefers to use Restylane in the tear trough (under the eye) area to smooth out the hollowness that appears with age. Restylane is also highly effective for adding volume to the lips, correcting the marionette lines and smoothing the fine lines above the lip. Perlane, which has the thicker consistency, is perfect for filling larger areas such as sunken cheeks and nasolabial folds (the area between the nose and the mouth). If you are looking for an affordable, effective and less invasive way to diminish these signs of aging, injectable fillers can be a wonderful solution that provide an instant result with minimal downtime.

Another method that has been around for over 10 years is the use of Botox®. Dr. Torgerson explains that, “When administered by a licensed professional, Botox® is extremely effective for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® relaxes muscle activity that causes the lines and wrinkles. Using Botox regularly will prevent the formations of fine lines and wrinkles and soften existing ones.” Normal facial expressions can still be made and after 3-4 months, a repeat treatment appointment should be made. Dr. Torgerson typically uses Botox® in the forehead region, eyebrow area and around the eyes to diminish the crow’s feet wrinkles that appear in the corner of our eyes. The treatment takes only approximately ten minutes and the results can be shown within 4-6 days.

A third method that is growing in popularity is the use of lasers. There are several lasers that are used for different cosmetic reasons. In Dr. Torgerson’s Yorkville clinic, he prefers to use the Harmony Laser 360 and the C02 iPixal Laser. “Both lasers are for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation, but differ in strength”, he says. “The Harmony Laser 360 specializes in reducing fine lines, wrinkles and discolouration from deep within the skin where the C02 iPixal Laser is used for both superficial skin conditions and deeper damage”, he says. The Harmony Laser 360 is a non invasive procedure and does not require any downtime. The CO2 iPixal Laser on the other hand, is more powerful and does require 3-4 days of downtime. With just a few sessions, both laser treatments provide beautiful results within 60 days.
