The Isles of Greece: Pergamon

DAY SEVEN

We have opted to take the full day tour to Pergamon today. We ride a cable car to the Acropolis. Pergamom fell to Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. and the theatre, carved into the side of the hill is spectacular. We also visit Asclepion, an ancient health centre with its sacred road. We have a typical Turkish lunch and are lured by roadside vendors shouting, “ Come in here. Cheaper than Walmart!”

We arrive back just in time to change for a cocktail reception for the Canadian passengers, arranged by Donella, the cruise director, so that I can meet everyone officially.

An added bonus is that everyone has the chance to meet other Canadians and the din in the Observation Lounge is boisterous as everyone shares the highlights of their day and common interests.

We met Grant from B.C., who was venturing out on his first trip without his late wife, and Sven and Marianne from Bracebridge, who had convinced their widowed friend Elsbeth from Holland to join them. A group of friends from Creemore and Orillia were trading stories about grandchildren, and I learned that Peter and Lydia from Toronto live only a few blocks from me. It was a great party!
