The Greying of AIDS

Amidst the education and awareness campaigns that mark today’s observation of World AIDS Day, there’s one demographic that may find themselves feeling increasingly left out of the conversation: Zoomers.

While most literature is aimed at younger generations, better treatments and longer life expectancies mean that a larger number of people living with HIV/AIDS are over 50 years of age.

According to GrayingOfAIDS.org, by 2015 over 50 per cent of people with HIV in the U.S. will be over 50 years of age. Combine this with the fact that studies have shown an increase in sexually transmitted disease (STD) and infection (STI) rates in retirement homes due to a lack of protection being used and it’s clear that something must be done to ensure Zoomers are educated and aware of the risks they face when engaging in sexual relationships.
