Combatting elder abuse in Manitoba

It’s a nasty fact of life: up to four per cent of older Canadians suffer some form of abuse — financial, physical, emotional — often by a family member. Many are afraid or reluctant to report the offender.

Manitoba’s Minister Responsible for Seniors, the Hon. Jack Reimer, has launched a public awareness campaign designed to protect seniors from such treatment.

A new toll-free help line for seniors or family members can be reached at 1-888-896-7183 or 945-1884 in Winnipeg. Bilingual staff will provide information and make referrals to the appropriate community resources or authorities, and all calls will be confidential.

In addition, the Manitoba Seniors Directorate will provide consultants to organize workshops and information sessions. A poster and brochure, developed to educate Manitobans on the issue is also available.
