When we take medication, we always want to be sure we are getting the greatest possible benefit from it. But, when we take more than one medication, the different instructions and contradictions can be confusing and concerning – managing multiple medications isn’t always an easy thing to do. The Government of Ontario is excited to introduce MedsCheck, a better way to make sure your medications are doing their best for you. On top of your prescriptions, discuss vitamins and over-the-counter or alternative medications with the pharmacist in order to get the greatest benefit from your appointment.

What is MedsCheck?
MedsCheck is a unique new program for people taking three or more medications to treat a chronic condition. In order to understand the complications of multiple medications, MedsCheck enables you to schedule an appointment of up to 30 minutes with a pharmacist.

We know that one of the most important things a pharmacist can give you is advice and now you can get more of it than ever. Think of it as a comprehensive medication review; a chance to fully understand your prescriptions and get the peace of mind you need to feel confident about your medications. And it’s free.

Why is MedsCheck a good idea?
Drugs work better when they are taken correctly, but it’s easy to get confused when you are taking many different prescription medications each day. Spending up to 30 minutes with a pharmacist is a good way to ensure your medications will be as effective as possible.

Also, the pharmacist will provide you with an accurate medication list that you are encouraged to bring with you when you return to a pharmacy, visit another health care provider or go to the hospital. It will give you the confidence of knowing that you are getting the most out of your medications.

How do I know if MedsCheck is right for me?
If you’re an Ontario resident and you’re taking at least three prescription medications per day to treat a chronic condition, then MedsCheck is a great way to feel confident about managing multiple medications. Talk to a pharmacist about getting an annual MedsCheck appointment.

What should I bring to my MedsCheck?
In order to make sure your MedsCheck is as beneficial as possible, it’s important that you be prepared. Bringing the following items will ensure you get all the information you need.
• Your Ontario Health Card.
• Any current medication containers, including those from other pharmacies, or a list of all your medications.
• Any over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and/or herbal remedies you are currently taking.

What should I ask the Pharmacist during my MedsCheck?
Make sure you take the time to think about questions you may have for the pharmacist. If you have any questions or concerns, a MedsCheck appointment is the best time to get them answered. Here are some ideas for questions you could ask:
• Are there any foods that I should avoid when taking my medications?
• Should I take my medications at any specific time of the day?
• Are there any activities I should avoid after taking my medications?
• What’s a good way to help me remember to take my medications at the right time?

MedsCheck gives you the opportunity to make sure that you know all you need to know to get the most from your medications. If you want to learn more about MedsCheck, get more information at www.medscheck.ca or call 1-866-255-6701 TTY 1-800-387-5559.
