The Zoomer Report: Out of Country OHIP
We’ve all heard the stories about Zoomers who have had to leave to the province or the country to get timely treatment for life-threatening diseases like cancer. It could happen to anyone. Dealing with the bureaucracy may be the last thing you think of doing in a time of crisis. But if OHIP doesn’t approve the procedure beforehand, the rules say you won’t get reimbursed.
You can either get your family doctor or a specialist to submit the application. The medical procedure you want has to be performed at a hospital or licensed facility, and it can’t be experimental — the ministry decides on a case-by-case basis. And the word is you can get a quick decision.
You or your doctor can call a toll-free number 1-888-359-8807, or go to the website at www.health.gov.on.ca. Click the OHIP button and choose out of country treatment.
