The Zoomer Report: Nicotine Replacement

Here’s important information for anyone trying to quit smoking. New research suggests that nicotine patches and nicotine gum don’t help many smokers kick the habit and remain cigarette-free over the long haul, This conclusion is based on results of several surveys which revealed that smokers who used these aids relapsed just as often as non-users. This observation held up among both heavy and light smokers, regardless of they received professional cessation counselling in addition to nicotine replacement therapy.

The study spanned six years and looked at the experiences of nearly 800 Massachusetts residents who had quit smoking shortly before enrolling in the study. Within each two-year time frame, about one-third of the quitters had begun to smoke again. Nicotine replacement therapy appeared to have no impact on the relapse rate, meaning that those who used the therapy for six weeks or longer were as likely to relapse as those who hadn’t.

The researchers say their study looked at real-world use over the long-term, which is why it contradicted other well-controlled studies that have shown that nicotine replacement therapy can be effective. The findings are published in the online edition of Tobacco Control.
