Thanksgiving Harvest from Local Farmers’ Markets

By Charmaine Gooden
Thanksgiving is here and your local farmers’ markets are brimming with fresh produce of the field, delicious prepared foods and pies to ensure your Thanksgiving dinner is a success.
Farm fresh fruit, vegetable, herbs and baked goods cannot be compared with what you find in the grocery store – they are days or weeks fresher, and they haven’t gone through “supply channels” such as being shipped in trucks or on boats for miles from another state or country. Sometimes, “fresh vegetable” might mean the farmer picked the vegetables by hand that morning and loaded them into their vehicle a few hours ago.

Ontario residents can visit www.greenbelt.ca to find local a farmers markets in their neighborhood. The Greenbelt is an area of permanently protected farmland, forests, wetlands, and watersheds in the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the Rouge Park. Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation help to promote farmers’ markets in Ontario.
