A Colourful Career

Don Meredith, one of the first stars of the Dallas Cowboys and later a popular broadcast figure, passed away yesterday at the age of 72.

“Dandy Don,” as he was known to all, wrapped up his successful career as a quarterback for Dallas in 1969. In retirement, however, he went on to greater fame when he joined Howard Cosell and Keith Jackson on ABC’s “Monday Night Football broadcast” crew. With his colourful style and willingness to poke fun at his on-air partner Cosell, Meredith helped turn football’s first weekly prime time broadcast into a ratings hit. He’s perhaps best remembered for singing “Turn Out the Lights” near the end of each broadcast, after outcome had been determined.
