What Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau Should Wear in Washington

Mrs. Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau goes to Washington. Yes, the beautiful wife of our Prime Minister is also part of the Canadian entourage descending on the US capital today for a three-day state visit.

While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be discussing and building US-Canada relations with President Barack Obama on this historic visit, Grégoire-Trudeau will have her own itinerary of events to attend. One of which will be a meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama to discuss humanitarian causes. Then of course, there is the much anticipated State Dinner at the White House in honour of the young couple – the first in almost 20 years for a Canadian Prime Minister – and no doubt, a glitzy affair with an exclusive guest list.

And while much attention will be paid to what will come out of this meeting of the two countries’ leaders, there will be the inevitable scrutiny of the young and beautiful Grégoire-Trudeau. So what will she wear on this international stage and spotlight? We speculate and offer a few options from Canadian designers that she might consider for this visit or any other state visit in the future.

For her arrival in Washington, a winter white look would be a strong style statement to make as the wife of the PM visiting from the vast and spectacular great North. From designer Kim Newport Mimran’s Pink Tartan label, may we suggest this look from her fall/winter 2015 collection. Striking in its simplicity but also cool and modern. UPDATE: Grégoire-Trudeau just touched down in Washington wearing a off-white pant suit from Montreal designer DUY.

This coat dress from the spring/summer 2016 collection from designer Mikhael Kale, features the most extraordinary and detailed hand-work done in Toronto. What better garment for Grégoire-Trudeau to showcase the level of craftsmanship coming out of the Canadian fashion industry? Ideal for a cocktail party she might be attending in Washington, like the reception hosted by the Smithsonian Institute and Canada 2020 and where The Weeknd will be performing.

The Milan based Dsquared2 label designed by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, is a hip brand favoured by rock stars like Rihanna and Madonna. This stately all-black look from their fall/winter 2016 collection is dramatic and will make a definite fashion impact at the State Dinner.

Another wildly popular Canadian label is Greta Constantine, designed by Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill. This metallic gown and evening coat, from their fall/winter 2016 collection which was just shown in Paris, is another glamourous option and brings a suitable amount of grandeur to an auspicious event as a State Dinner at the White House.
