Hudson’s Bay Unveils Team Canada Collection for 2016 Olympics in Rio

Bold reds, bright whites and giant maple leaf motifs – it’s not going to be difficult to miss Canadian athletes at this year’s Summer Olympic Games in Rio.

Hudson’s Bay, the official outfitters of Team Canada, unveiled this week on Facebook Live what our athletes will be wearing at the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

And it appears that the graphic and bold designs and colours of the iconic Canadian flag played a major part of inspiration for the retailer’s in-house design team responsible for the collection.

“Wearing Canada’s colours unites us all, and we are looking forward to cheering on Team Canada as they go for gold in Rio,” said Liz Rodbell, president of Hudson’s Bay in a release.

The retailer provides each athlete – there are 315 on the Canadian Olympic team and 170 on the Canadian Paralympic Team – a clothing kit that includes full outfits featuring leisurewear, jackets, pants, T-shirts and accessories to wear around the Olympic Village, on the podium and at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Often athletes will trade various items from their kits with other athletes from around the world. In the past, hats and mitts from Team Canada were much-coveted items.

For these summer games, Hudson’s Bay garnered a major coup by having Dsquared2, the popular and trendy Milan-based label by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, designed the opening ceremony uniforms for our athletes. Featuring sporty-looking blazers, shirts with fish tails and Ts with cheeky beavers graphics, it gives the collection some added style edge that should have the fashion crowd clamouring for pieces.

The Team Canada replica wear is available online at thebay.com and available in stores starting May 4.

The Summer Olympic Games begin in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5.
