Q&A With Gordon Pape: RRIF Investing

Q: I have invested my wife’s RRIF portfolio of $82,949 as suggested by you in a conservative RRIF mix of investments. We are pleased with the return it is providing. We will be transferring in an additional $11,000 to the account. Would you suggest an additional investment or simply adding to the existing investments proportionately? —Don R.

A: Before you take action, review the asset mix in the portfolio and see if it is suitable for your purposes. Everyone is different and you may want to include more bonds or cash to reduce risk. The securities in the portfolio are fine but I suggest that you discuss the situation with your financial advisor before making any purchases. —G.P.
