Longevity may be the most important trend we’ve ever experienced. It’s driven by — and in turn, it affects — everything from health to housing, money to technology, lifestyle to social policy. There’s so much to be aware of — and it’s just getting started! Now you can keep up with all the latest developments in this weekly column.

I’ve reported here consistently on the ever-growing size of the longevity market — now easily approaching the trillions. It was inevitable that somebody would begin to track it as a moving index. That company is Spannr, which provides news, data and insights on the longevity space.

As reported here on Yahoo, the Spannr Longevity Stock Index “includes publicly traded companies that Spannr believes reflects the dynamics of the longevity economy across science, technology, business and finance.”

The article quotes Cody Sherk, the founder and CEO of Spanner: “Ground-breaking technologies will transform how humans age, and we believe investor interest in the space will grow significantly in the coming months and years. With the launch of the Spannr Longevity Stock Index, investors now have a benchmark to measure performance and optimize their investment strategies. Our intent is to attract interest from new investors who are looking to allocate capital to this rapidly growing trend.”

The base date of the index was May 10, 2022, with an initial value of 100, and the company intends to rebalance the index quarterly.

As of Aug. 5, the index value is 132.4, just slightly down from its high for the year, of 133.06. Its low for the year was 85.28.

The index includes 26 companies, with market caps ranging from over $4 billion to only $15 million; three are over $1 billion, 12 are between $100 million and $1 billion, and 10 are under $100 million.

I think we can expect the rapid creation and deployment of many more tools to analyze the longevity industry the same way as other major industries are being studied. The exciting thing is that longevity is an industry, and growing like crazy. There will be a lot to keep an eye on, and you can be sure I will.
