Doing it yourself

As with wills, there are kits that can be purchased from a variety of sources that you can use to draw up your own power of attorney. But remember – the issue is not simply the completion of a form. The issue is the legally valid expression of your wishes. Financial and legal professionals recommend that the next time you update your will, for example, would be a good time to put powers of attorney in place, and to complete a living will. And make certain that you discuss your wishes with family members, that they know that these documents exist, and where they are kept.
