Four ways to cut your auto insurance

Follow this advice and you may knock hundreds of dollars off your premiums.

1. Don’t use your car to commute to work. You can reduce your premium significantly.

2. Check with your insurer before buying or leasing a new car to determine how it will be classified for the calculation of the premium. If you are undecided between two or more models, you may find that the insurance rating tips the balance.

3. Avoid getting tickets for moving violations. They will push up your rates and don’t get wiped off your record for several years.

4. Pay the cost of small dings or bumps yourself. Making an insurance claim, even a small one, can push up your premiums.
