CARP’s Three Demands

In October, 2006, the NoMoreWaiting campaign was launched by CARP, Canada’s Association for the Fifty-Plus.

The goal: three specific government actions to improve Canada’s health care system.

The demands:
1. Guaranteed wait times for 18 essential medical treatments;

2. Immediate coverage, under all provincial drug benefit plans, of all drugs approved by Health Canada;

3. $2 billion to be earmarked by the Federal Government for caregiver respite.

Thousands of people signed our petition and hundreds registered their wait times and sent us their stories.

But now we’re shifting the focus – temporarily.

WE’RE CONCENTRATING ON THE SCANDALOUS SITUATION IN ONTARIO REGARDING ACCESS TO THE NEWEST INTRAVENOUS CANCER DRUGS AND TO PET SCANS.

Ontario ranks second worst in Canada in fully funding access to the newer intravenous cancer drugs. And absolute worst in Canada in funding PET scans.

This would be worth campaigning about at any time.

But there’s a provincial election scheduled for October 10. So we’ve joined forces with a new grroots coalition, the Ontario Citizens Cancer Coalition, to make Ontario’s shocking performance an election issue.

If we can take advantage of the election to pressure Ontario politicians into much-needed action, it will be an important sign of the power of an aroused population to make a difference in health care.
