Medical Cannabis: Aphria’s Quality Promise

Many Canadians report using cannabis for medical purposes*¹. Those that choose medical cannabis are seeking relief from pain, anxiety, or other ailments². Every patient’s situation is unique and deserves a personalized level of care. All medical cannabis patients deserve to know that they’re receiving high quality products and services to meet their medical needs, regardless of their ailment.

*While cannabis can be used by some people for their health problems, determining whether cannabis is appropriate to treat an individual’s symptoms is best made through a discussion with a health care practitioner¹.

Delivering an expertly crafted product has been at the foundation of Aphria’s business, and they hold themselves to high standards when it comes to the cultivation and production of medical cannabis. Every product sold by Aphria is backed by their Seed-to-Sale Certified quality promise, a strict quality management program that includes over 500 steps.

From initial cutting to final bottled product, the entire life cycle of their medical cannabis is tracked. The comprehensive program includes a state-of-the-art facility, cultivation and processing controls, quality production and procedures, standard practices and training, and an established supply chain. Here’s a look at just a few of the steps in the Seed-to-Sale Certified program.

Growing and harvesting conditions are closely monitored. In the greenhouses, energy efficient LED lights that employ a colour spectrum to create optimal growing conditions are used. Vertical and horizontal air fans regulate temperature, CO2 (carbon dioxide) and humidity in order to maintain controlled environmental conditions. Carbon filter units are installed in the greenhouses to remove odors and help to maintain air quality.

From water management and nutrient profiling of the fertilizer blends to an integrated pest management program, every step of the growing process is controlled. Daily pH and electrical conductivity measurements are taken of the growing media to ensure that the nutrient concentration pH levels are in the controlled range.

Following harvesting, the plants are processed.  The product undergoes a drying/curing process in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment.  Each batch of medical cannabis undergoes a rigorous visual inspection.  Stringent product testing is done to check for microbial and chemical contaminants including heavy metals, aflatoxins and pesticides. Single-channel pipettors are used to test the potency levels of different cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, in both cannabis oil and dried cannabis bud. Finally, all of their products are tested by an independent third-party laboratory. Only medical cannabis products that meet exacting standards for quality are approved and released.

Aphria understands that there can be a lot of decisions involved with taking medical cannabis. One decision patients should never have to worry about is the quality of their product. Aphria patients can be sure that they’ll receive a clean and safe cannabis product that has been grown, processed and tested following Aphria’s comprehensive quality system, 100% of the time³.  For additional support, their award-winning Patient Care Team is committed to offering compassionate and approachable assistance every step of the way.
