It takes two to tango

Maintaining a relationship, whether it’s one of long-standing or brand-new, does take a little loving care and nurturing. Here are some suggestions from marital therapist Karen Solomon Ament:
- Notice, then tell your partner you appreciate the things he/she does for you, however small.
- An unexpected hug will pay off in emotional capital.
- Take the time to talk, and listen, to one another daily.
- Accentuate the positive: Emphasize the attractive qualities of your mate.
- Treat one another with respect.
- The freedom to be honest is the key to all relationships.
- When conflicts arise, don’t let them simmer — negotiate to resolve the issues.
- Listen attentively, making an effort to understand your mate’s point of view.
- Kindness is an essential ingredient.
- Maintaining eye contact, say “I love you” as often as you can.
- Never be too proud to say “I’m sorry.”
- Be tolerant of one another’s foibles.
- Make your own space — this is vital in a healthy relationship.
