Best in Canada: Welcome to the ‘Peg: Winnipeg

Executive one bedroom suite

Place Louis Riel Suite Hotel
Renovations continue at Winnipeg’s Place Louis Riel Suite Hotel, so make sure to ask for an updated suite. The hotel’s downtown location is within easy walking distance of The Forks, a traditional meeting place for millenniums (now a popular destination for tourists and Winnipeggers alike). Or head in the other direction to galleries and shops in the historic Exchange District. On the way, stop off at Toad Hall Toys (one of Canada’s truly wonderful toy stores) and stock up with books, wind-up toys, trains, magic tricks and puppets, all great for grandkids’ upcoming birthdays.

CHECK-IN The surprisingly roomy executive suites have spacious separate bedrooms, full-service kitchens, leather furniture and better-than-average showerheads, suitable for a longer-length stay. Rooms have also been updated with flat-screen TVs and Internet access, but if you’re traveling sans laptop, there are computers just off the lobby.

GOOD EATS Cooking breakfast? Buy eggs at the fully stocked in-house convenience store. But the hotel’s family-style The Ground Floor Urban Diner also deserves a taste. Its otherwise plain decor showcases the distinctive paintings of Winnipeg’s Shirley Elias, a clue that the food will be attractively presented and imaginatively prepared.
